My First Redditgifts Exchange: Secret Santa 2013

December 25, 2013

My first Redditgifts Exchange is coming to an end, and it’s been a great experience.  This Secret Santa is like any other, except you receive your match from a pool of over 100,000 people.  The rules to this Guinness World Record breaking event?  There is a $20 minimum, a shipping deadline, and no trolling allowed.

I signed up to become an Elf.  It’s a paid feature that supports the site and, among other benefits, qualifies you for early matching.  I recommend it for the latter alone.  Since you receive your match on Black Friday, you can purchase a gift at a discount and ship on the same day.  Being a procrastinator, I did not take advantage.

When I received my match, I was beaming with excitement.  Since the site is anonymous, selecting the perfect gift is like a treasure hunt.  The info you receive is limited, so you have to do a bit of digging.  I found out that my match is a married Italian woman about my age.  She’s an artist who loves to bake, paint and travel.  I discovered her favourite food is sushi, but since that doesn’t ship well I found out all her other favourite flavours as well.  She seems like a lovely person and I was so excited to find the (hopefully) perfect gift for her.

Putting together a gift for my match was as exciting as receiving a gift from my Secret Santa.  Unfortunately, the Italian postal service is slow, and she hasn’t received her gift yet.  So, without disclosing any details, here is what the finished product looked like.

Around the time I sent my package, I received a message from my SS.  She asked me a few questions and shortly after informed me that my gift had been shipped.  She said she’d used and didn’t realize until after that the items would not be shipped together.  I decided to wait until they all arrived to open them.

Over the following weeks the packages started arriving.  My mother intercepted them and wrapped the gifts along with the notes my SS had sent.  It was nearly Christmas and all but one gift had arrived.  My mom, sister and I were watching television when we heard footsteps on the back patio.  To our surprise, it was the UPS man.  He’d jumped the fence, braved the unknown backyard and, luckily, avoided the dogs.  He wanted to make sure the package arrived before Christmas.  We thanked him for his dedication and sent him off with a box full of freshly made butter tarts.

Finally, it was time!!  To my delight, my SS had put together a themed gift.  She called it the “WHAT IF Road Trip Edition.”  She’ done some digging of her own and had created an amazing and very thoughtful gift set.  Here are the gifts and their accompanying notes:

I didn’t expect exchanging gifts with a complete stranger would be this much fun.  I had a blast, and my SS’s create gift inspired my entire family to participate next year.  If she’s reading this, thank you again and Merry Christmas!
